I build backend-heavy systems in C# and .NET, and I've been doing it for about 10 years. Most of that has been in fintech, banks and stock exchanges, where things are heavily regulated and expensive to get wrong. Multi-tenant platforms, secure APIs, and a lot of legacy that had to keep running while it got better.
Backend is where I'm most useful, but I don't avoid the rest of the stack. A fair amount of my work has been TypeScript, Node, and Angular when that's what the job needed.
Most of what I know about architecture came from supporting those systems afterwards, not from designing them upfront. I usually end up holding the cross-cutting decisions and mentoring the people around me, whether or not that's my title.
When something surprises me I tend to write it down. That's what the Scratchpad is for.
